[twitter]The Shaw Charity Classic is back for another year at Canyon Meadows and you have a chance to hang with defending champion Fred Couples.

To make this magic happen, you just have to play like Fred – sort of.

The Shaw team have recreated the last 4 holes of Canyon Meadows on Stephen Ave (239 8th Ave SW) in downtown Calgary to replicate Fred’s final charge last year. Conquer the course like he did and you’ll get a chance to meet the man.

The 4 holes are 3 putts of varying distance, and then one final chip in, just like Fred did for ealge on 18. Each hole have increasing point values, sink it 1 shot and get all the points. Anything else gets you zero.

I went and took a shot at the Stephen Ave course with Zacharie. I caddied for the kid, and we had some fun. I love getting Zacharie out to play as much as possible. He doesn’t play particularly well, but he’s got a love of the game that’s growing.

Attendance at the The Shaw Charity Classic is free for kids 17 and under when they accompany a ticket holding adult. That’s awesome. We need more kids on the course. Lots more. This is a great way to get them into the game, as is the little course on Stephen Ave.

Zacharie missed every shot. I think I only sunk one of them. That’s not going to be enough points to get us meeting Mr Couples next weekend, especially when the scoreboard is dominated by almost perfect scores.

If you want to take multiple shots at the Chip N Putt Challenge, have at ‘er. Just make sure you’re not tying up the line of other people wanting to try. Here’s more fine print:

Contest Format:
The competition will be broken into three separate components including qualification rounds, semi-finals and the final showdown on the 18th green at Canyon Meadows with Fred Couples.

Participants will play the four-hole challenge in hopes of earning the daily top score. Points will be awarded for each successful shot, increasing from one hole to the next. The top scorer of each day plus the next three runners-up will all advance to the semi-finals on August 5.

The top-two aggregate scores will advance to the final round the following day at Canyon Meadows Golf Club

With Fred Couples in attendance, the two finalists will go head-to-head in a chip off on Thursday, August 6 at 8:30 a.m. on the 18h hole at Canyon Meadows Golf and Country Club. The chip-off will be from the same location of Couples’ thrilling eagle chip-in last year.

Contest Dates and Times:
July 29, 30, 31 and Aug 4 are the Qualification Rounds from 8a – 6p (239 8th Ave SW)
August 5 Qualification Roud is from 8a – 5p with the Semi-Finals going 5p-7p (239 8th Ave SW)
August 6 FINALS at 830a at Canyon Meadows G&CC

The eight semi-finalists will be awarded a prize pack including signed memorabilia and the choice of a Taylor Made putter or wedge. While the champion will also enjoy Sky Box passes on the 18th hole for the weekend, and an honourary observer spot with Fred Couples.

So take an extra long lunch, drop in after work, or be like me and pick up the kids after daycamp, haul them back downtown on the CTrain with their clubs and give them a shot.

Don’t forget to also take a selfie wearing one of the big blue cowboy hats. Shaw is hoping to set a Guinness World Record for Selfie taking. The goal is 10 000. So chip in!
