We need more kids on the course.

Golf needs to grow the game and letting kids ride along with dad or mom to wash the balls, pull the pin, and make a putt or three is all that’s really needed. That’s how I got Zacharie into the game. His favorite part when he was 5 was playing with the yardage computer in the cart and the ball washer. Now, 5 years later, Zacharie has an interest in actually playing golf.

Here are some places for kids to get golf lessons around Calgary, and below is a  list of places where they can play. Some of them are short courses tailored for their skill level, some are the big links where they’re invited to tag along with mom and dad and learn etiquette, skills, and the rules of the game.

Junior Camps and Memberships
There are weeklong summer daycamps in July for kids aged 8-18. Also, for junior golfers 12 – 18 whose parents do not have a membership at a golf club, they have a chance to play their hearts out with unlimited golf as junior members for $595.

Copper Point

It’s not “local” but enough people from Calgary head west over the mountains to the Kootenays in the summer, that this course gets to make the list. The Ridge Course at Copper Point in Invermere is one of our all-time favorite family courses.

Kids Play Free at this course seven days per week at anytime. The young junior golfers will have access to both Copper Point and The Ridge golf courses with a paid adult round. Weekends and holidays the kids play free are 24 hour advance booking, all other days are 30 day advance booking.

And then there are summer camps, a Tim Hortons tournament,  a kids’ section in the Pro Shop, and more events. The family friendly atmosphere of this property can’t be celebrated enough.

McCall Lakes Par 3

Families of four can golf at McCall Par 3 for $33 ($37 with rentals).  It’s a quick and easy 9 hole course that is easy for beginners and challenging for parents. Kids over 6 are welcome on the course.

There are also selected family golf nights through the season where juniors golf for free. They also bring out the big cups (see above) which are tons of fun.

Richmond Green

Richmond Green is an easy to play 9 hole course ideally suited for beginner players. It has a club house with a licensed snack bar and basic golf supplies. Its course has been nicknamed a “Home of Family Golf”.

Family Golf Nights with City of Calgary

Rotating through City of Calgary courses over the summer, Family Golf Nights offer affordable rates and “big cups” to make the game even more accessible. Here’s what you can find at a Family Golf Night in Calgary:

At family golf night, juniors (6-17 years old) golf for free when accompanied by one paying adult. There must be at least one adult per foursome.

Families of four can golf, with club rentals, for $37 at McCall Par 3 and Richmond Green courses. Families can also golf at Lakeview for $48, including club rentals.

Lil Devil

This short 9 hole course features 7 par 3’s ranging from 50 yards to 175 yards and 2 par 4’s. This course is perfect for kids, beginners, and families. With a junior rate of just $15.90, it’s a perfect place to get some work on your irons and introduce your kids to the game.

Douglasdale Golf Course

This executive course boasts a huge summer lesson program. The course, an 18 hole par 60 lay out that can deliver a FUN and enjoyable round of golf for both the novice and the experienced golfer.

There’s also FootGolf on select summer nights so your kids can keep up with their soccer skills while learning the rules of golf.  The 21″ cups are in for kick off on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday between 2pm and 3pm, and Friday, Saturday and Sunday between 5pm and 7pm.

Silvertip

Silvertip offers a “short course” design. Temporary tee boxes have been installed to the side of every hole from about where the perfect tee shot would land. It’s great to work on your short game, and bring along people who are new to the game. In fact, they have a program where you can pay $75 to play the short course with a cart and you can bring along a kid for free. Genius.
