For kids who love being creative, experimenting, performing, or getting active, Mount Royal University has a wide range of summer camps for kids in Calgary. There are more than 18 programs running throughout the summer. They have programs for young kids (starting at age 5) all the way to high school students (17).  They can get active learning golf, canoeing, and mountain biking, they can learn art and performance and dance, they can dig into science experiments, robotic programming, and video game design. Your kid isn’t a one-trick pony, and neither are the offerings at MRU. They promise an unforgettable, action-packed, hands-on summer learning new things, meeting new people and having fun.

Location: Mount Royal University [4825 Mount Royal Gate SW]

When: Weekly full-day (8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) camps with free before and after care, all summer. (Some camps also run for 2 weeks)

What:  MRU Summer Camps have activities for kids ages 5-17. There are elementary camps, junior camps, youth camps, and leadership opportunities. Kids can delve into science, sports, art, language, and more. If you’re totally over packing lunch for the kids, check out their lunch plans that serves up healthy options for the kids at camp.

SOME MOUNT ROYAL SUMMER CAMP HIGHLIGHTS

CATS (for kids 5-9) Computers, Arts, Theatre and Science will have kids experimenting with e-scrapping and making some freaky modifications to ordinary digital images. They will create colourful collages, mixed-media sculptures, papier mâché creations and much more in the art studio. They’ll also develop original skits, short plays and puppet shows based on the week’s themes. Create chemical reactions and make multi-coloured slime, build edible volcanoes and demonstrate conservation by making recycled paper in science.

Junior Leaders (for kids 9-14) This one-week camp is designed to encourage leadership skills in youth. Learn about responsible decision making, goal setting and peer mentoring. Explore the topic of bullying and peer pressure through a variety of fun, skill building activities such as Survivor group challenges, interactive life size maze problem solving and team trust building exercises.

Tech Academy (for kids 9-14) These 2 week camps will give your kids a well rounded techno-education. Topics covered include: engineering and programming a Lego robot, developing a video game using backgrounds, animated graphics, music and sound effects, learning basic interviews techniques, taking pictures and draft your own e-journal as an e-journalist, and designing a website in one of the state-of-the-art computer labs.

Outdoor Adventures (for kids 9-14) Kids can learn safety and survival skills while hiking in Kananaskis and Fish Creek Park. Experience the waters of Glenmore Reservoir by canoe, kayak or dragon boat and get some valuable paddling tips from certified instructors at the Calgary Canoe Club. Tackle hills, bumps, dirt and puddles on mountain bike day trips. k country summer camps ConocoPhillips Youth Science Academy (for kids 13-17) Note: All ConocoPhillips Youth Science Academy participants receive a $100 scholarship towards the cost of the program. The Youth Science Academy Camp provides a solid introduction to students pursuing the post-secondary science and/or engineering stream.

For returning students, the camp builds on the knowledge and skills gained through participation in the Tech Academy camp. Projects may include designing a roller coaster, building a bridge, combusting gummy bears and extracting caffeine from tea while simultaneously learning higher-level science.
