Beakerhead is underway across Calgary this weekend and along with many events and celebrations come some cool installations, like the Raygun Gothic Rocketship Launch Site.
The team behind this beautiful installation, Five Ton Crane Arts Group, is an Oakland based collective that prides itself on working together as a team to tackle big, imaginative projects. “5TC does the heavy lifting that the individual artist couldn’t do on their own; by pooling resources, interests and talent to create opportunities for bigger, better and bolder Art.”The RAYGUN GOTHIC ROCKETSHIP is an immersive large-scale 40′ tall rocketship installation. Participants can interactively explore the rocket’s three interior chambers accessible through the bottom of the rocket and the top of the rocket via the gantry. The Raygun Gothic Rocketship is a rococo retro-futurist future-rustic vernacular between yesterday’s tomorrow and the future that never was, a critical kitsch somewhere between The Moons of Mongo & Manga Nouveau.
The Raygun Gothic Rocketship would be one of those bigger, better, bolder art projects. It is the classic space vehicle you’d see in a Tin Tin book on the outside, and the inside continues the nod to retro futurism. There are weird creatures, all sorts of dials and navigating tools, and a spinning chair for the pilot in the top.
The Raygun Gothic Rocketship stands 40 feet tall, a long ladder takes you in to the bottom of 3 floors, and you climb around like a classic explorer from the future past. It is, simply, spectacular.
You can check out the Raygun Gothic Rocketship weekend Saturday: 10:00 am – midnight or Sunday: 10:00 am – 5:00 pm at 1400 1st Street SW.
