It’s winter getaway / spring break season and whether you’ve been keeping up with your resolutions or looking to get back into the swing of things, a vacation is the perfect time to .. workout.
Seriously.
I just spent a week away with the family in Cabo and I blasted through my average daily steps each day. I got short runs, long walks, and relaxing meditation in. Here’s how to do it:
1. Get Up Early
Keep the same early rising schedule you have when you’re in the daily grind at home. Get up at 5 or 6 or whenever and get a workout in before breakfast. Instead of having to rush and get everyone out the door to school and fight traffic, you get to use this time to get in some exercise.
Many resorts and hotels have fitness facilities. Put in 20, 30, 45, on the treadmill and get your day off to a great start. This early rise workout can also time perfectly with .. sunrise. After I finished my morning treadmill work, I walked the beach and did a sun salutation as the sun crested above the Sea of Cortez.
Now you’re ready for breakfast.
2. Buffets Are Your Friend
Yes, All Inclusive resorts have all sorts of awesome decadence when it comes to food options – they also have very healthy options too. Gone is the stress of trying to make steel cut oats, blending fresh juices, scrambling some eggs. Skip all the heavy breakfast items, load up on some fresh fruit, lean proteins, and whole grains. They’re all right there alongside the fancy stuff.
Now I get it, you’re on vacation, so pick a cheat day (or two), but really try and get into the groove of healthy options and portion sizes when you’re away, the buffet makes it sooo easy.
3. Pack Your Own Gear
Now if your hotel doesn’t have a fitness facility, no worries. You can still get a workout in by packing along your own strength training gear (love these TRX Fit Straps). If there are no treadmills, ask your front desk for a local run route (many hotels have handy cards with 3k-10k routes in the area clearly marked).
Make sure you bring a plastic bag to contain the sweaty mess after you’ve worked out. I pack along my Adidas Ultra Boost shoes (the softest running shoe I’ve ever had), the Adidas Freelift Prime top (moisture wicking to stay as fresh as it can be), keep those steps in check and be inspired to get up and move around with a Fitbit Charge 2.
4. Go Shopping And Exploring
Steps are steps are steps, people. Pack along that Fitbit Charge 2 and watch your average step count explode. 1) you’re getting an early morning workout in 2) shopping and touring is walking.
My biggest step count day on vacation was the day we took a bus into the old town and toured San Jose del Cabo for their weekly art gallery night.
5. Have A Nap
Now just because you’re getting up early and keeping fit doesn’t mean you can’t relax! You’re on vacation! Find a hammock, a book, some shade, and an icy drink and take some time to recharge. And if you fall asleep for a little afternoon siesta, it’s all good – you’ll be charged and ready to tackle the next day.
How do you work out when you’re away?
