20110820 Lake Louise

[twitter]I spent a half hour sitting at Lake Louise soaking in the summer sun. I heard no English while I sat, yet I understood it all.

The world was gathered to have a look at Canada. Yes, this one spot was, to them, Canada.

It was mountains, snow and a lake. The perfect setting for everything we put on postcards in one shot – and they were going to be in it.

And the tourists smiled, posed and re-posed. They traded cameras, communicating with universal hand gestures of trust asking and offering to take pictures of each other.

And then, just as we Canadians get goofy holding up the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Euros got goofy in our home and native land.

Those two girls must have jumped 20 times. First together, then apart and then others thought “hey, that’s a fun pose” and you’d think a House of Pain concert was about to happen as everyone began to Jump Around.

I sat and listened to the giggles and watched as everyone posed for pictures. Pictures that, most likely, will be the highlight of many tourists’ trip.

After all, it was them by a lake. By a glacier. In the mountains.

Oh Canada.
