The following is a series of handwritten letters my grandmother filed in a scrapbook for me documenting my visit to Disney World in the spring of 1975. She wrote the entries in my voice as if I was telling them to my parents back home. I am so grateful for this gift. I call it a blog, because it is no different than what I am doing nearly 40 years later when I archive the stories of my kids.

April 25, 1975

I woke up at 745 am. I called Nanny and she got up. She and I got dressed and we went down to the ocean.

We walked along the edge of the ocean in our bare feet. Then a big wave came in and knocked me down with all my clothes on! I got all wet. Nan laughed at me. We found sea shells, sea urchins, sponges, and seaweed. We came back at 915 and we woke up Karen and Grandpa.

We had one of our hand-picked oranges. We all went down to breakfast. Then we all put on our bathing suits and had lots of fun in the ocean.

We saw seagulls, and pelicans, and sandpipers. While we were on the beach, 9 Royal Navy Helicopters flew low low over the beach. Each one had a different flag. A Royal Navy Aircraft Carrier is in at Port Everglades.

We had lots of fun on the beach til noon hour.

Grandpa had a business call in Hialeah. We all went and Nan, Karen, and I went to the shopping center. Grandpa met us. We stayed til suppertime. Had supper and did a little more shopping. We got back to the hotel too late to go back to the beach.

Nan says to cal her as soon as I wake up and we’ll go to the ocean before Grandpa wakes up. Tomorrow is our last full day – we will be sad to go home.

I bought a pail and shovel for the beach tomorrow. Grandpa wants to take us on a boat trip, but Karen and I want to stay at the pool and beach.

I am beginning to get a tan. The ocean water is salty. It washes tar up on the beach and get it on our feet sometimes. Karen likes the pool better.
