THE BEER: Spark House Red Ale“Pours with a deep copper, almost reddish-brown hue resembling teak, with an ivory-coloured foam that lingers nicely. The aromatics are all malt – caramel, toffee, roasted grains, darker breads like pumpernickel and rye, and a very slight note of smokiness. The flavours are roasted grain, nutty and toffee with that subtle smoky note. The mouth feel is dry and roasted with moderate bitterness and a well-balanced finish.”
TASTING NOTES: via 2013 Craft Beer Advent Calendar
Despite its name, the colour of Spark House is more brown than red, but it features delightfully light, fruity flavours. A lot of people know that hops can contribute fruity flavours, but don’t know that malts can contribute fruity flavours as well. In this beer, the malt contributes a gentle caramel note, but also some fantastic apple fruitiness. A light roasted bitterness emerges in the finish. Fantastic!
MY REVIEW: 3.5/5 on Untappd
Nice red ale. This one is right in my wheel house with just the right amount of bitter tartness mellowed with fruitiness.
