[twitter]in July 1999, Britney Spears was the toast of all things pop. She had hit us .. Baby One More Time, and was already on to Sometimes and (You Drive Me) Crazy. It had been a whirlwind 8 months for the teenager. She’d topped the charts, been dubbed the next Madonna and, at just 17, had breast implant rumours swirling about her.

I bring it up because it was a big deal when I went to interview Britney backstage at GM Place before her Vancouver concert. We were told, in no uncertain terms, not to bring up the tabloid topic.

Instead, I talked to her about her tshirt, from Abercrombie and Fitch. It was odd, as her tour was sponsored by Tommy Hilfiger. It wouldn’t be the first brand fail Britney would have, later getting caught drinking Coke while pitching Pepsi.

We also chatted about her days in the Mickey Mouse Club and how it spawned so many great careers. The interview lasted about 10 minutes, but I’ve only got the portion that aired on Z95-3 in my archives.

So, here’s my Britney Spears interview from July 26, 1999:

You can catch That 90s Show Sunday nights at 7p on Z95-3.
