Be Careful What You Wish For

This week I was watching yet another social media panel’s hashtag fly by in my stream lamenting a missed opportunity to participate. I’ve been writing social media essays for a few years now and when I go and see pro speakers like Mitch Joel and Tod Maffin speak I’m always thinking “Yeah! Exactly!” to their points on the growth and evolution of new media. Many times their theories mirror essays I’ve written.

So I fired a note to Doug Lacombe and asked to be kept in the loop for further opportunities to engage with the local community. A day later he’s inviting me to present at Third Tuesday Calgary.

It’s one thing to sit in the stands and think “I can do that.” It’s another to strap on the skates and hit the ice. Still, keynoting is something I’ve always had a keen interest in exploring. So I’m doing it – June 21, Third Tuesday Calgary.

My talk will be “Parenting The Facebook Generation.” I’ll tackle the pros and cons of letting those under 13 get on the site early. I’ll talk about tools and tips parents can use to lock down and monitor behavior.

I’ll also talk about the art of Mommy/Daddy blogging and how, for those who want to overshare, the web is full of social media tools that can help parents diarize their kids’ lives and make new friends.

I’ll lean on my experiences with DadCAMP and the Yummy Mummy Club plus I’ll pull from some essays and theories I’ve explored on cyberbuzz.

Despite 20+ years on the radio, I have never given a public presentation before. I’ve spoken to some radio schools about the industry, I’ve emceed charitable fundraisers, movies and concerts but I’ve never given a talk. With slides. In front of a very smart and capable audience. I can’t wait. See you there.

Great topic – so glad it is being presented on.

My young daughter has a blog, it has become more of a journal chock full of learning milestones, events, things she likes etc. We do struggle with the balance of privacy, embracing technology and being engaged online – a serious consideration for anyone, especially youngsters.

Looking forward to your insights on Facebook! All parents need to understand this platform.
