Florida, 1975 – Day 6: Kennedy Space Centre

The following is a series of handwritten letters my grandmother filed in a scrapbook for me documenting my visit to Disney World in the spring of 1975. She wrote the entries in my voice as if I was telling them to my parents back home. I am so grateful for this gift. I call it a blog, because it is no different than what I am doing 40+ years later when I archive the stories of my kids.

April 24, 1975

Our day started with breakfast at the Holiday Inn restaurant. “The kids ate free.” Then we had a short drive to the Kennedy Space Centre. We went inside and I saw capsules, space suits, space packs. Then we went outside to the see the spaceships, rockets, Lunar Modular and “The Rover” – the car the spacemen practice with was also there.

Karen and I had a ride in it and the man let me drive it. It was fun. Then we went on a 2h hour bust tour. We went 55 miles all over the space centre. we saw the launch pad here the next flight takes place in July. The rocket is already in place. It is so tall.

We went into a huge building where the spaceships are made. We saw a model of the capsule and the Russian one that are to hook up in space. We went into a block house where all the controls are.

Nan said it was a great experience, but I was a little bored although it was good. We left the space centre and had lunch at McDonald’s. Then … we had a lovely ride back to Ft Lauderdale where we found the Howard Johnson Hotel right on the ocean.

We are on the 6th floor. We have a gallery we can sit on and look at the ocean. Right away Karen and I got on our bathing suits. We went swimming til 630. The pool water was 76 degrees. The temperature all week has been in the 80’s. We ate supper in the HJ Restaurant. We all had a turkey dinner.

Then we went for a walk on the beach to watch the huge waves come in. We are going to stay here for 3 nights.

At the space centre grandpa says he is going to send me to the moon.
